Cart abandonment
Cart abandonment is when a shopper adds items to their cart but leaves without completing the purchase.
What it means
Cart abandonment rate is usually calculated as one minus completed purchases divided by carts created, expressed as a percentage. High abandonment signals friction between intent and checkout — the shopper wanted to buy, but something got in the way.
Common causes
Unexpected costs, forced account creation, and slow checkout are familiar culprits, but so is unanswered hesitation. When a shopper has a question no one answers, or isn’t sure a product fits, the cart expires unnoticed. Most ‘recovery’ tactics chase them afterward by email; answering in the moment prevents the abandonment in the first place.
A shopper unsure whether a jacket is warm enough for winter leaves the item in the cart — a question, not a price, lost the sale.
By answering shopper questions in-session, MerchantIQ addresses the hesitation that drives abandonment before it happens.

Commonly as 1 − (completed purchases ÷ carts created), expressed as a percentage.
Can on-site help reduce abandonment?
Yes. Much abandonment comes from unanswered questions and hesitation; resolving them in the moment prevents drop-off that email recovery only chases later.
